Would You Give 2 Hrs This Fri./Sat. To Stop a US/Iran War? (2-2-12)

Would You Give 2 Hrs This Fri./Sat. To Stop a US/Iran War?

RATE: 4 Flag
Saturday, February 4th, has been declared a global day of mass action to stop a U.S. War with Iran. I intend to go to Times Square (Duffy Square-47th St. & 7th Ave.) @1pm for the rally. There are scores of US cities participating (see list below) and cities/communities in England, Ireland, Bangladesh, India, Canada, etc., on this upcoming Friday or Saturday.
Here is an opportunity to hit the streets and communicate OUR citizen-truth and citizen-will to POWER. The power brokers to whom the welfare of humanity, our own and that of our fellow foreign human beings, is tragically no longer a priority.
Do we really want an obscene amount of our tax dollars devoted to another war, thousands more of our young soldiers enduring death, psychological and/or physical maiming, as well as further thousands of innocent foreign people for whom we have no personal malice?
Do we want another US war on our consciences? We need to take responsibility. Responsibility = “the ability to respond”. Here is an opportunity. An opportunity to SAY NO to amoral militarism for corporate profiteering.
Below there is 1) a statement of appeal/petition to stop a war between the US and Iran compiled by some of our leading anti-war activists, 2) a consciousness raising quiz from World Can’t Wait that helps combat the corporate media's drumbeat of anti-Iran propaganda, and 3) a list of participating cities with rally addresses and times.
There are three types of people. 1) People who make things happen, 2) people who watch things happen, 3) people who ask, “WTF happened????”
This Friday or Saturday join the pro-active people of conscience group THAT MAKES THINGS HAPPEN! In other countries some people are rallying despite risks far more dire than the ones we will face showing up.
Please consider.
The link for the Saturday, Feb. 4th, “Day of Mass Action Against War with Iran” on World Can’t Wait’s website is here and here.

AN APPEAL TO UNITED STATES AND ISRAELI AIR, MISSILE AND DRONE CREWS TO STAND DOWN FROM ORDERS TO ATTACK IRAN
We are at an historic moment when decisions are being made in the United States and Israel on whether and when to attack Iran.
These will be decisions by politicians and individual commanders and air, missile and drone crewmembers charged with the responsibility of raining down munitions in a strike that will likely kill hundreds if not thousands of Iranian people and potentially spread deadly nuclear contamination to millions in Iran and surrounding nations.
Beyond this, an attack on Iran will almost certainly bring retaliation that will result in even more human casualties and will disrupt global oil shipments, with severe human consequences around the world.
An attack against Iran by the United States and Israel will violate morality, international and domestic law and the interests of humanity.  Additionally, both Iran and the United States are parties to the Kellogg-Briand Pact which forbids the use of war.
There are those of us signing this appeal who have been members of the United States and other armed forces and understand very well the difficulty of refusing to follow an order to attack.  At the same time, each of us as the responsibility to preserve human life and nature in the face of inhuman and illegal orders, a responsibility defined by the Nuremberg Conventions.
We urge all of you who may be called upon to attack Iran from the air, and indeed all military personnel who may be engaged in any kind of attack on Iran, to refuse to do so.

World Can’t Wait’s Quiz: Iran: “Who is the Real Threat?”
1) Which country(ies) in the Middle East/South Asia refuses to confirm or deny that it has a nuclear weapons program and refuses to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty?
ISRAEL, IRAN, PAKISTAN, INDIA
Answer: Israel, Pakistan and India have not signed the treaty. Israel does not publicly admit it has nuclear weapons, although the fact that it does is common knowledge. Iran has signed the treaty and does not have a nuclear weapons program.
2) What country agreed to be monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and has repeatedly opened up its country to IAEA inspectors?
US, ISRAEL, IRAN
Answer: Iran
3) Which country’s prime minister has been attempting to persuade members of his cabinet to make a preemptive military strike against a neighboring country?
IRAN, IRAQ, SYRIA, ISRAEL
Answer: Israel
4) "The International Atomic Energy Agency and the U.S. have provided evidence that Iran is attempting to obtain nuclear weapons. "
TRUE OR FALSE?
Answer: False – neither have provided any evidence that Iran is attempting to obtain nuclear weapons.
5) The IAEA severely criticized which country for falsifying information on Iraq and Iran’s nuclear programs?
IRAN, IRAQ, RUSSIA, US
Answer: United States
6) According to the UN Charter and Nuremberg Tribunal, what is the gravest war crime of all?
1) attacking a country which hasn’t attacked you, 2) torture, 3) killing civilians, 4) collective punishment
Answer: Attacking a country which hasn’t attacked you. This is called a war of aggression, which “contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole.”
7) Which is the one country on the planet which has actually used nuclear weapons against a civilian population?
Russia, Japan, Germany, US
Answer: The United States, which bombed the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagaski during WWII, killing between 150,000–246,000 people within just the first 4 months, half within the first 24 hours.

Great post, Libby. Hopefully these marches will have a great turnout. We have to send a message that people who support a war against Iran have no hope of being re-elected in Nov.
Thanks for the heads up.

This is based on a bunch of lies as you have indicated; I could go into an enormous amount of history that is undisputed but not repeated often but by now those that want to know already know and those that don't probably won't believe anyway.

If I did it would start with 1953 and include the fact that Iran offered to help find the terrorist after 9/11 only to be accused of being part of the "axis of evil" anyway BEFORE they elected the current extreme president when they still had a moderate one that was more willing to negotiate.

It hasn't been the Iranians that have been the least cooperative.
Thought you might be interested in this quote I just found:

"See, governments kill with impunity and sometimes they choose killers to go out and kill people for them. They justify it, they rationalize it, they pin medals on killers. Well, if you don't have a license to kill for the government, they won't pin a medal on you but they'll put you in the gas chamber."

Makes sense but not everyone will consider the source to be reputable. It's Richard Ramirez; he didn't get medals.
Thanks, Stuart. I am praying it will be a good turnout. The fact that it is happening worldwide is also significant. Of course, let's see if it gets any mass media attention!

Thanks, Zachd! Yes, those that know by know know at least some of the reality but as you say those that don't have an inkling probably don't have open ears or minds. This is where the media is most craven, the drumbeating for war, manufacturing a consent of the citizenry that doesn't exist, with the disinformation and the demonizing and the cold shouldering of any leftie people of conscience.

Wisdom about the obscenity of military killing from the Night Stalker! That is a twist, but what he says is certainly true!

Best to both of you, libby
Estimates were there were 500+ of us rallying and marching to the US and Israeli embassies from Times Square this afternoon. A robust rally I would say and I was proud of so many citizens out there walking the walk. My favorite sign was "The enemy is on Wall Street not in Iran!"
remember the months leading up to, and the lame excuses for the Iraq invasion? I know you do. I felt so helpless. Maybe somehow our voices can be heard this time.
tr ig, thanks for showing up and commenting. :)

Yes, I do remember. And I am old enough to have been coming of age in the Vietnam era. Which gave me a sense of empowerment back then, eventually, and also a sense of guilt and frustration looking back especially beginning of the G. Bush regime, but also when daddy Bush's war was so popular with my ex-hippie friends, WTF???, who were not pausing over the media's lack of addressing the thousands of deaths that first Gulf war was inflicting.

I realized how the "ball was dropped" and "eternal vigilance" was not upheld after the impact of the 60s protests. We had a fourth estate, then, despite all the dysfunctions, that sometimes or some of them, more of them, did investigative journalism and it actually impacted policy. Now, no and no.

Even when facts are revealed and brave whistleblowers come forward, Orwellianly, they are the ones prosecuted. What betrayal. Obama has prosecuted more whistleblowers than any other Prez in US history! With more to come for sure. And now with the NDAA ... Dear God!

I agree re helplessness also as I listened to all the WMD propaganda, and the war mongering of the paid off generals on Meet the Press every Sunday and weekdays on the NewsHour, etc, throughout the year, etc., even without the insane drumbeating to war of Fox. I felt helpless and frustrated but prayerful a "correcting" path would eventually be taken. How come in my heart of hearts and mind I knew there were no WMDs but the likes of Ted Koppell, say, did not??? WTF?

I also thought that the Afghan and Iraq wars were waged by horrifying incompentents (SNAFU military -- situation normal, all f*cked up). There was a level of naivete in me of the helpless stupidity of the wagers of the wars and their naivete. That they thought the people they were oppressing would give everything over in the name of faux-democracy a/k/a corporate profit opportunism without the carnage. That there was at least some level there of wanting to "rescue" the people, even a little, from real oppression at times, but the goals clearly are exploitation. Maybe the troops at least at the beginning bought the sham but found out soon enough and patriotism and national pride circled the bowl and their goals shifted to keeping themselves and their buddies alive at all costs as their minds and bodies went through the insane wringer we can't even begin to fathom multiplied by up to 9 deployments at this point (per Stuart).

But now I see chaos is their friend, the war criminals, and cannon fodder troops are not their priority, not even close. As they give shameless "honor the troops" lip service. They have a level of war and greed and cronyism and power addiction that is off the charts. They WANT destabilization. They want civil and regional wars re these countries so they can walk in and more easily savage after the little guys have weakened each other. They want to be make shock and awe desperate bombed back to the stone age vacuums of in the wake of long-standing civilizations, with millions displaced, millions actually killed.

To have a country when it found out WMDs did not exist, still cowboyed it, and kept up the violence and the economic and political raping, OUR COUNTRY IS NEVER WRONG as well as the Israeli tribal cronyism that survives on myopic loyalty and denial! And the violence CONTINUES, despite the happy talk of "successfully" withdrawing, just more bullshit. As well as the drawdown in Afghanistan.

We placed weak governments, or tried to, in these places and doomed the people to warlords and danger and poverty and starvation and birth defects for their children, and cluster bombs to kill and maim at any moment, and generations of hatred for the West, the killing governments as well as the amoral ostrich lemming and/0r racist "exceptionalist" citizenries. Our and NATO govts even took the R2P mandate of the UN and exploited it for hegemony. Collective evil between USWarMachine (which of course includes Israel) and NATO. We in the US could use a real R2P ourselves as we are being domestically economically savaged with police state militarism growing.

You know marching down 42nd Street east from the Broadway area was great because it stopped traffic. It was a cold but nice day and people were chanting with signs and drumming and passion and tourists and NYC pedestrians had to step aside, the cops had to stop traffic. And many people had looks of curiosity and confusion. Many didn't know what on earth people were so upset about re Iran. That's that mean country, right? And the numbers of us couldn't be dismissed by the watchers. Though will we get news coverage in the city let alone national corporate media?????

Lots of OWS stuff going on. Mike check speeches. Sometimes the speakers gave us sentences way too long. Sometimes when they asked rhetorical questions of outrage, instead of repeating we answered back like with a resounding NO!!!!!

I was so happy for that hardworking organization The World Can't Wait led by Debra Sweet. They have been showing up nationally at protest events, showing up once a week say in NYC at military recruiting stations to talk to potential cannon fodder volunteers, and since the Obama election the protesting numbers have been modest. But they have kept up the organized showups. With the war criminals doing their milliion dollar speaking engagements, like Kissinger whom the younger generation doesn't begin to know about in terms of massive war criminality.

BTW, I think Cindy Sheehan must have gotten whiplash looking around wondering where the peace movement went the moment Obama stepped into office. WTF????

But their (WCW's) resolve and organization and focus has been sustained. They and other groups like the Vets groups for Peace and CodePink and Grannies Brigade and the Greens and so many others got to enjoy today some newbie, recently awakened citizens who were willing to walk the walk. Some of us like me talk the talk a lot more than we actually put our proverbial asses on the line, whether risking arrest or just sacrificing some of our precious weekend time.

Sorry to go on and on, tr ig and whomever came by. You know I am glad I wrote the above blog. I had to work an extra shift the night before and I was on fumes re sleep today but because I was asking others to show up I had to follow thru and I am so grateful I did!!!!!

Best, libby
