No.
David Brown and Patrick Martin of wsws don’t think so, either. In their article,“Obama’s Cynical Gesture to Immigrant Youth” they have put together a more comprehensive argument than my initial one, which was based on the merciless sirens of cognitive dissonance that bounce around in my skull every time Obama opens his mouth.
Not that they don’t have strong feelings also. They call this “gesture” of Obama’s “CYNICAL” and “SELF-SERVING” and a probable “TROJAN HORSE.”
Obama himself comes to mind with their use of the expression “Trojan Horse”, as well as, say, Obama’s invoking the idea of “humanitarian intervention” to bomb the sh*t out of sovereign countries for corporatist exploitation. Then there was Obama’s magic act with the disappearing “public option”, more of a “Trojan pony” some have said. How effectively he managed to derail the universal health care movement in this country with that one. But I digress.
Obama’s suggested latest policy involves undocumented immigrants who were under 16 when they came to the United States with their undocumented immigrant parents. From this grouping, only those who are still enrolled in school or have graduated from high school, or who have been honorably discharged from the military are eligible. Another requirement is they have no criminal record including misdemeanors.
Now this grouping might reach 800,000 in number. Impressive, until you consider that there are 11.2 million undocumented immigrants in the United States. Any plans for the rest of them? I know, I know. Obama has the reliable “I can’t do miracles” I can only imply I am slouching to the right side of history as back-up defense. But, I’m thinking what happens to the undocumented immigrants when some of their kids step forward out of the shadows? Obama has some humanitarian contingency plan for parents and relatives? I don’t think so, judging on his past heart-breaker of a track record.
Anyway, if a young immigrant fulfills the above requirements then he or she can ENROLL and WILL BE CONSIDERED for Obama’s plan ON A CASE-BY-CASE BASIS.
Say what? On a CASE-BY-CASE BASIS?
Apparently, since this will be in the hands of the Department of Homeland Security, there will be some serious scrutiny beyond the above eligibility requirements. Wonder how many of us citizens, ourselves, could even begin to pass muster with that massively OPAQUE surveilling and strong-arming organization? So how many of the 800,000 kids will then end up eligible? I’m thinking they sure as hell better stay away from any OWS demonstrations or even OWS political thinking.
But let’s stumble onward.
“OKAY, JOHNNY, TELL THESE IMMIGRANT KIDS EXACTLY WHAT THEY’VE WON!!!!!”
If a kid’s case passes muster with the Department of Homeland Security, THEN he or she MAY avoid deportation for TWO years and receive a WORK PERMIT.
Only two years? Then what?
A “work permit”? Then what?
A “work permit” in a country where thousands of jobs circle the bowl every month while media and politicians ignore the massive “joblessness” of an economic “recovery” in which 1% corporatist bonus babies are obscenely back or even more in the green and the rest of the 99% citizens are in quicksand. Welcome to our quicksand, kids!
So, once again. The kids register as ILLEGAL. Turn themselves in. TRUST the Obama administration, which may be replaced by the ROMNEY administration in less than a year. And what do you think Romney might do about Obama’s waffly electioneering “maybe” “temporary” policy?
But not to get too far ahead of ourselves, let’s take a real look at the Obama immigration track record in case he is still with us, which is more than likely.
This is what Brown and Martin have to say:
In the course of his 2008 election campaign, Obama fostered hopes among immigrant workers and youth of a more humane immigration policy. Once in office, however, his administration has driven immigration enforcement to new heights of brutality. By 2011, the Department of Homeland Security was deporting 400,000 immigrants a year, an all-time record. Since Obama entered the White House, his administration has deported an estimated 1.2 million immigrants.
Obama and MSNBC and all those Stockholm Syndromed, evidence-defying Obama apologists want us to believe in Obama’s cautious yet faux-rejoice-able “evolving” state on important, granted, social issues. The fact is it is election time -- Lucy and the football game time with Obama -- and there is a juicy Hispanic demographic (like the one of gay voters) Obama wants to seduce. For those many many who ignored the “small print” amidst Obama’s pro-gay marriage rhetoric let me paraphrase. While Barack has slowly come to believe (cough, cough, choke) that gay people should be able to marry, he also maintains such unions are at the mercy of the will of the states. (That is not taking a stand, imho, that is a weaselly lean against two stools!)
Brown and Martin on Obama’s fine print on the youth immigration so-called two year “relief”.
Once registered, immigrants still have no path to citizenship and their legal status is only temporary. Even if there is no immediate double-cross, the condition of the newly registered would represent only the regularization of their status as an exploited underclass. Obama is declaring these immigrant youth good enough to work for the minimum wage or less, but not entitled to basic democratic rights, let alone full citizenship.
NO REAL DEMOCRATIC RIGHTS. NO PATH TO CITIZENSHIP.
And the possibility of a “tough-talking on immigration and everything else to try to out-right Obama” (which is very hard in essence) Mitt Romney coming soon to a country near you.
Not that on immigration Obama was the lesser of two evils, at least not seconds before last Friday’s pro-immigrant photo op and all that style not substance rhetoric. Thankfully for Obama, MSNBC -- major supplier of Obama hopium -- long ago chose myopia instead of addressing the not-so-fine fine print of Obama’s grand gestures. They’ve now got him walking on water on behalf of those lovable and earnest immigrant kids. (“Team Dem Must Win” election mantra, dontchaknow!)
So if Obama gets back into office, you don’t suppose he’d throw the immigrant youth under the bus, do you? Like, say, his original anti-war voting base? Health care advocates? Women’s rights advocates? Union workers (think Wisconsin)? The poverty-wracked and jobless? ETC., ETC., ETC.!!!!
Brown and Martin have his number:
On immigration, as on countless other issues, Obama dropped his election promises and pursued a policy just as right-wing as that of the Bush administration, if not even more reactionary. In 2008, Obama won two-thirds of the Latino vote, but polls now show that 59 percent of Hispanic voters disapprove of the administration’s merciless deportation policy.
Thus, after three years of devoting massive federal resources to enforcing immigration laws and deporting undocumented workers, Obama has now dusted off his “moral” compass and declared his sympathy for undocumented immigrant youth. Where was this sympathy before June 15, 2012? The executive order Obama announced that day could have been issued on January 20, 2009, when he took office.
snip
In fact, there are no significant or principled differences between the two big business parties on the question of immigration. Both uphold the persecution of immigrants and oppose any extension of democratic and citizenship rights. Both parties do the bidding of the financial aristocracy, which profits financially from the super-exploitation of immigrant workers and profits politically from dividing the working class along ethnic and language lines.
So, we get lots of Obama razzle dazzle. With a lot of naive conviction among citizen peers and faux-progressive media personalities that such an amiable personality as Obama would never “set up” the immigrant youth trusting him so earnestly.
Obama, disinclined to ever approach a national issue seriously and comprehensively, is ALWAYS very willing to exploit the most convenient of the moment with brazen hypocrisy. To grandly promise a small measure to be snatched back with a shameless lack of acknowledgement. Don’t dare protest when it happens, since he is (drum roll, please) THE LESSER OF TWO EVILS. (cough, cough, choke!)
To a gamesman NOT STATESMAN like Obama, the ends always justifies the means. The worthy ends are, of course, all about his own self-aggrandizement (as well as ultimately proving unconditional political loyalty to his corporate pimp-overlords).
With this immigrant youth case, this year, the ends are his re-election to the presidency.
Vaya con Dios, kids. Not with Obama!

My comment on another blog:
I agree it's a political ploy for votes rather than a move out of conviction. Hispanics refer to Obama as the Deporter-in-Chief, to wit:
"In fact, President Obama has deported 1.5 million Latinos, more than any president. Such a massive displacement of humanity does not come without brutality. In the first six months of 2011, 46,000 mothers and fathers were shipped back to Mexico and left their children in America. And more than 20,000 other parents were ordered out but have yet to depart. Roughly 22 percent of all deportees were forced to abandon children — children who are American citizens."
People who honestly care don't act like that. This was a Presidential order he carried out here in this phony act, one he could have done at any time, no one to blame but himself.

You continue to outdo Yourself. I found myself wondering about that number "800,000." You have answered all my questions. I labeled it pandering from the first. You have provided the backup to that contention.
I canNOT thank You enough.

A bit harsh but not to far off the mark, here's how I just commented at Mary Gray's latest post and it seems to fit here as well: "Obama won his first term despite the odds against him and walked into a firestorm of arbitrary crisis and active political sabotage. If he survives this election to serve a second term, Obama will no doubt continue to try to find validation through consensus, because he knows that in the long term 'buy in' by all or most of the 'vested interests' is the only way real progress can last. Rather than condemn the man for not being what we'd like to be, why not recognize his honest efforts to serve all the people of the nation?"
In 1963 Senator Mike Mansfield warned President John Kennedy that he was about to publicly call for the withdrawal of US troops from South Vietnam. Kennedy smiled and said, "Do whatever you feel you need to Mike; but before I can bring them home, I have to get re-elected."

the only hope Obama has in this year: oh Lord, let there be no change in the White House.

If I was latino this would guarantee that I wouldn't get close to President Obama in this election.
He did this right before the election. Why not a couple of years ago? I can see he is just sucking up to me.
I have to give myself up to Homeland Security and hope (is that what Obama meant by hope during the election) that I'm one of the lucky ones. If not, I'm on the way out. I just walked into the largest deportation administrations in history and said "here I am".
Even if I'm lucky enough to get my two years, now what? They know where I am and they can come and get me.
Let's vote for this guy again and -hope- that we don't get pandered to again. Maybe we should vote for the other guy. He couldn't be any worse than Obama and his willingness to kill Americans, tell gay jokes about his wife, and pander to LGBT groups and Latinos.

Can't ever trust politicians..about anything. They will say and do whatever it takes to stay in office. And then...they will write books, going on speaking tours engagements and play golf. It might be the biggest scam ever! Game called: Lie and Win.

jmac and scanner -- appreciate you commenting, but you seem to be keeping the commentary "pragmatically" and deliberately myopic and maybe just a teeny bit condescending, scanner, though appreciate your visit here definitely and celebrate especially your drones blog!
Obama wants to make the Repubs look heartless to the immigrant kids for the Latino vote he is losing. Meanwhile, will HE sincerely and substantially help them or is this slick slimy gamesmanship yet again? I'm thinking welfare of immigrants not on Obama's priority clipboard, just the short term seduction for a win. Then throw 'em under bus along with the rest of the betrayed thus far.
He can't even muster a sincere win/win, even a short one, scenario. Just more smoke and mirrors to confuse his constituency one more time with FALSE hope for change ("fuse" "with" is how I interpret meaning of "confuse").
Once again, from too many people whose smarts I admire, pragmatic and bottom line desperate ENABLING of a in-the-now toxic leadership with "lesser of two evils shut up and let the Dems win" thinking.
"We coulda had a moral contender" and there is still time (Jill Stein-GP), not a Trojan Horse of a Prez!!! In 2012, Obomney???
Obama reminds me of a slot machine that shells out a bit of coinage just as you are packing up to detach from the machine. You are never gonna win. Just be teased to stick around with that addictive "hope". You are more likely, imho, to jackpot on a said slot machine than getting social justice (domestically and internationally) and economic recovery payoffs -- even modest ones -- from Obama.
I'll be back to further comment.
Thanks all for commenting so far.

I read somewhere that Obama has deported more people than the last eight presidents combined. And as for your OWS movement I have two violent felony convictions Libby that’s why you won’t find me anywhere near any of your demonstrations but be sure to let me know when you want to riot. I must warn you though surrender is not an option for me.
CG! 22% were forced to abandon children! Thanks for your statistics. They are pretty chilling. Does Obama really think he can get over with Latinos with this stuff? Or just appeal to myopic faux-progressives with a faux-liberal media supplying liberal sounding frosting on a really ugly travesty? I watched the Newshour tonight and it focused on the Repubs stammering about it all, trying not to look too badly counterpointing the Obama crap. What kabuki all around. I guess in the world of political chess, Obama played slyly well. In the world of human rights, not so much.

Mark, thanks! I am glad I came across the article. When Obama's actions sound too good to be true, it seems they always are. I think he did Cash for Clunkers right, and pulled it too soon. But maybe there was something creepy with that I also don't know about. He and the ENTIRE DEM PARTY jumped the shark a long time ago. Sigh. best, libby
PW, the war on empathy rages on. What the US has come to do best tragically. But you can find justice almost any hour on L&O. Seems to satisfy most Americans apparently. best, libby
I wonder if we nekked apes will ever evolve to the point where either we don't need leaders anymore or the leaders we choose will have to be exemplars of character. Now, of course, to be an exemplar of character means eschewing big-money politics.
El-thanks for visit. Obama's hope and vision of change don't coincide with the needs, desperate needs, of most Americans -- the non 1% gated community ones. My malice about him comes from his willingness to be puppet to oligarchs -- to be the American Judas -- to play the role of President actorly with mendacity while serving the corporate overlords. At first I thought he was an obstructionist to progress, but he is far more aggressively destroying our constitution and our freedoms. I watch media and fellow progressives stay passive as the evidence of these betrayals pile up and I am stymied.
He is not an isolated traitor. We have a whole Congress and Supreme court of them.

Catnlion -- I am supporting Jill Stein. She asserts the kind of decent governance I would like to see. If I get caught up in lesser evil strategizing and enabling, I will only add to the dead weight of the American problem and not live in the solution.
We are having an election in 2012 where 99% of the population don't have a serious dog so to speak in the race. But media is busily hypnotizing us that we do. Obomney. A two-headed corporate party, Dems/Repubs are working for the same overlords. No wonder all the money is trickling steadily and rapidly up to them still. It's not that the money is gone. It is that the pols set it up so that the corporate overlords got to exploit and abandon and betray us. As David Michael Green points out, being a billionaire is not enuf, they had to be zillionaires!

Ande, I'm with you! The game is rigged. "They" won't let you in the game, until you betray your values and commit to betraying the collective citizenry's standard of values. Kinda like joining the mob by killing. But media and THEY (political and corporate rat bastards and rat bastard media) have framed the election process, that was set up not to be so grotesquely distorted by money and mendacity. What burns me is that we have 300 million people who could organize so much more. 3 kinds of people. People who make things happen. People who watch things happen. People who too late ask WTF happened???? We need to stop watching and stop enabling by just watching and get into the proactive awakened mode! Obama is running on lesser evil default mode. How disgusting. best, libby
Jack, the thing of it is, 300 million strong, we shouldn't have to flex with violence. We could do something more, but time is passing fast and things are worsening and the scaffolding of fascism is getting all set up. If we flexed our minds and our awareness. If we refused to be hypnotized by media, even boycotted manipulative media. We have power. Louise Hay says "the point of power is always in the present moment!" The people who are passive and enabling are hanging out to dry those people willing to commit civil disobedience or whistleblowing or asserting reality to power or trying to. They are or will be more and more left to twist in the wind, and have or will have institutionalized injustice and revenge perpetrated on them, because denial or minimization or apathy or being so straddled and distracted with one's own personal plights will cause their fellow Americans to betray them. Leave them to be at the mercy of the liars and a government whom despite its attempts at impression management cannot hide its cravenness and amorality and cruelty. Suicides in the military are epidemic but that won't stop it from making kids murder for corporate profit. They are tools to a sociopathic system. To choose to go along, is to join the enemy as, I hate to say it, the good Germans chose to in Hitler's time. best, libby
toritto, I can't joke about that any more, my friend. but appreciate the good will.
Chicken Maaan, does it all come down to human nature? What is it in human nature? If power and control means so much to them, give the sociopaths the reins? Is that what it comes down to?
Are we so beaten down by cultural conditioning while growing up, so narcissistically divided when we get to adulthood, so easily divided and xenophobic, so incapable of partnership and cooperation and good will to our fellow human beings?
I know we have been watching matter of fact cops indifferently step over corpses night after night on the tube, have we lost sensibility for shock and awe over horrors? We have been goose stepping by homeless people on our national streets for decades (in NYC I am seeing more young women and young women with babies begging now, sitting on sidewalks!).
80 million people were on the same page the night of Obama's election, having believed they had turned over the Bush page. But Obama lied. He's still using and grooving on the Bush playbook. We were not on Obama's page and he was not on ours. He lied.
He doesn't care what page we wanted to be on. Neither does the media nor either legacy party. They clearly have decided they get to pick the page, the disrespect of the citizenry is so PROFOUND.
They say in 12 step rooms you have a high bottom (enter recovery after minimum crises in your life, you wake up sooner) and a low bottom. Apparently the US collective citizenry has not HIT BOTTOM yet. Going for a very low bottom. The addiction to Obama and a Dem Party that puts the knife in the back whereas the Repubs put it in right through the front continues on. I guess the knife in the back is the lesser evil. Considered that. I say, they both kill ya.
Or another analogy, raped by repubs or date raped by dems? How many date rapes do they get????

Unfortunately, that was a cheesy move. If he keeps that up, his new nick name President Kardashian will stick. Excellent post, Libby. R
With our two-party system, which drags in people from all along the spectrum to the left and right of the center, candidates have no other choice than to do whatever it takes to get elected and re-elected. Any Poli Sci 101 student can tell you that. It's an election year, and the stakes are high. Romney is pandering to everyone right of center, Obama is pandering to everyone left of center. As the election nears, both will attempt to move toward the center in hopes of grabbing some of those "independent" voters who claim to sit dead center.
It's what presidential candidates do and have done in this country for generations. It's less about the individual, and more about the political system. Immigration is one of those great American political red herrings that is dragged out every election cycle to whip the bases into a lather. That, or Willie Horton. What would our politicians do if they couldn't stir up passions without brown and black people?

Deb, NO, I don't accept that framing, sorry. "Candidates have no other choice ..." NAWWWW THEY ACTUALLY DO!!! Jill Stein is travelling the country collecting support and non-corporate funding.
Poli Sci students maybe should be taught about ethics and morals rather than political strategizing. You know there was a law school teacher from Harvard or Yale on Charlie Rose one night crowing as to how he was so proud of his students who had crashed the economy. They were THAT smart. I would have spit on him had he been in the room with me.
It's an election year and the stakes are high. No it is a year in everyone's life and 1 in 5 if not more kids go to bed in America hungry now. Joblessness, homelessness! Sweatshops for those of us "lucky" enough to still be hanging onto a job. Obama is droning people in other countries and dismissing the collateral damage as part of the game. Foreigners who are adult age to him can be written off as insurgents or terrorists he has slid down the slippery slope that far.
He should be impeached not re-elected and his impeachability has nothing to do with Romney. It is all his doing. His willingness to protect torturers and war criminals and to be a war criminal himself. To give our tax money to the rat bastards who crashed the economy. to reward them and set them up to continue to plunder us.
I read a blog on Daily Kos and Kurt Sperry I think it was said the Dem Party has thrown all its principles under the bus to chase down some fringe Republicans and some wild card independents in states like FL and OH they are so addicted to the win and have lost sight of the big picture, the MORAL picture. What people need and want.
"It's what presidential candidates do" is a cop out and a rationalization not to push them not to do unprincipled things by citizens who are choosing to be part of the dead weight of the problem, to live in the problem and not in the solution.
80 million Americans were near-mobilized, no, were mobilized to push the vote for Obama, and it crapped out because he was not the person in reality we thought he was. But that doesn't mean we should not re-mobilize. Not to trust Party or media, or we haven't learned anything!

Not to trust Party or media, or we haven't learned anything!
thanks for commenting, btw! best, libby
[r] yeah, Stuart. I think the DHS is looking for "stepford" immigrant youth who have no natural horror and rage as to what has been done to their country people and families! Willing to trust an administration that has been so craven and cruel!!!! best, libby
Libby, I'm with Ande. Liars all. Of course the latest reach-out to the immigrant youth was a carefully planned and timed political maneuver. It's hard to not become cynical in this climate. Thanks for another excellent report.
I'm glad to hear he is letting them stay for now but I don't think he deserves brownie points either; this is essentially why he seems to do things. I often hate to be so cynical but when I think about what a sincere politician would do if he wasn't under the control of a corrupt establishment I never seem to have to look far to see what is wrong.
Some alternative candidates have been on the right side of the issue all along but the corporate media doesn't give them any attention. I'm guessing you've heard of one of them at least.

Sheriff's deputies knocked on the door of my friend Carmen's house at 5:30 a.m. one day last August. Her younger brother Andres was the object of their call and he was arrested on the spot and taken 90 miles south of her home to a county jail in Charleston, SC., where he was held for four weeks and then moved in the middle of the night to a deportation facility outside of Atlanta, Georgia. He was imprisoned in this place which is run by contractors of the federal government and was there for another six weeks before his deportation to Mexico. During this 10-week period no members of his family could visit because they were all undocumented individuals who risked deportation themselves if they tried to see him. Andres is in his early 20s and has lived in this country since he was a teenager. He works hard, has an incredible smile and wanted to go to college. He committed no crimes, and my partner He's been "home" with his mother and father for almost a year but I continue to communicate with him and he misses America and his family and friends here. Immigration issues are so very painful when they are personal and hope is put on hold.
