NATO ministers met in Brussels today, December 5th, to approve Turkey’s request for Patriot missiles and for foreign and US troops to be deployed to their border with Syria.
The US/NATO War-machine plows onward in the attempted illegitimate overthrow of Syria, much as it did with its successful illegitimate overthrow of Libya.
Turkey has offered geographical strategic assistance to the US- and NATO-backed so-called “rebels” trying to overthrow Assad’s Syrian regime. Turkey now offers itself as a flimsy fig-leaf for craven powerful western intervention into Syria.
The latest “sky-is-falling” propaganda is that the Syrian regime is threatening surface-to-surface missiles armed with chemical weapons.
According to Bill Van Auken of wsws, the claim is unsubstantiated but that doesn’t stop the New York Times (so important, you remember, in selling the Iraq War long ago) and CNN to cite “unspecified intelligence” about the threat of chemical weapons.
NYT and CNN are picking up the war-mongering drumbeat from Obama (he is now free from pre-election war-mongering scrutiny, flimsy as it was) and a bellicose Hillary Clinton this week.
Van Auken writes:
If the American public is experiencing an unsettling feeling of deja vu, it is for good reason. For the second time in a decade, Washington is threatening to launch an unprovoked war in the Middle East on the grounds of phony “intelligence” concerning “weapons of mass destruction.”
Van Auken points out that David Enders of McClatchy Newspapers agrees that this Al Qaeda rebel force is “essential to the frontline operations” against Syria. Enders:
“Not only does the group still conduct suicide bombings that have killed hundreds, but they’ve proved to be critical to the rebels’ military advance. In battle after battle across the country, Nusra and similar groups do the heaviest frontline fighting.”
Van Auken suggests that the Al Qaeda-connected forces that are now overrunning Syrian military bases and executing unarmed “conscript” soldiers are the ones who may gain access to chemical weapons. NOT THE SYRIAN ARMY!!!!
These threatening Al Qaeda forces are U.S. PROXIES in the war for the regime change of Assad. These Al Qaeda forces -- again the ones who may get their hands on chemical weaponry and are so ruthless -- have been “armed to the teeth” (Van Auken’s words) by the CIA and Washington’s Arab allies, particularly Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
Washington wants another PUPPET REGIME in Syria and is ruthlessly going about it. It is once again exploiting sectarian-internal conflict for destabilization and regime change in another Mid-East country. The realpolitik goal in destroying the Assad regime is removing it as a strong ally to Shia-majority Iran.
The craven Obama regime is not only using the Iraq playbook but the LIBYAN playbook, along with the very same Al Qaeda-linked Libyan forces now in Syria to destabilize and replace a legitimate regime. These frontline “rebels” in Syria, are actually not Syrians. They are Al Qaeda-linked LIBYAN forces who are using arms stolen from Libyan stockpiles during that war, along with equipment and aid from the CIA, NATO, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, etc.
Colluding with Al Qaeda gets problematic for the US and NATO, even with the corporate media’s colossal blind eye. No doubt the bloody mess in Benghazi is evidence of that “blowback”. But apparently having the Al Qaeda forces do the preliminary “bleeding” of Syria -- with plenty of collateral damage -- which is so not a serious consideration to the US and NATO who only assert faux-humanitarian concern when it is militarily advantageous to expanding their own hegemony.
How craven is it for the US and NATO to enable the Al Qaeda forces to the point where they can acquire Syrian stock-piled chemical weapons or there is a convenient pr possibility of this and then to turn around and declare, as Hillary Clinton has begun to, that western forces must now formally intervene against the anti-Assad Al-Qaeda forces that have been the main "informal" proxies for US/NATO and other Arab countries -- having used their intelligence, money and equipment. The US and NATO must now step in to protect the traumatized surviving and vulnerable Syrians by OFFICIALLY bombing the shit out of the country EVEN MORE with their more sophisticated killer weaponry. That's rich!
How crazymaking and insanely evil is this game????
Obvious and profound question: Why is U.S. collusion with Al Qaeda in Libya and Syria not an issue for American media and Americans? Why is this not being called out? The exploitiation of the Al Qaeda presence first for destabilization and then for the ultimate-in-mendacity OFFICIAL intervention?
Has this surreal corporate-overlord fascistic matrix that has replaced US democracy stifled so totally basic common sense and a sense of human decency among our media and citizenry?
The NewsHour continues to demonize Assad tonight. The plight of the poor Syrians has nothing to do with US and NATO enabling "faux-rebel" bloodbath violence and destruction for anti-Iran hegemony according to it. As the matrix ever tightens.
God bless America? I'm thinking NOT!
WTF?

Fortunately the validity of this so-called "unspecified intelligence" is being widely challenged and ridiculed outside of the US. The parallels between Syria's alleged imminent deployment of chemical weapons and the Iraq's non-existent weapons of mass destruction was the subject of a 30 min BBC call-in program (World Have Your Say) last night. The BBC ultimately answers to the British Government. However I note Cameron's government is increasingly backing away from intervention in both Iran and Syria. The French, for some reason, seem to have replaced the British and America's lapdog.
Thanks, Stuart! It is good that UK is backing away and sad that France has stepped up to take its place! The use of Islamist thugs to "soften up" a US-NATO-targetted country and its population for ultimate regime change a/k/a traumatize, kill, displace, etc. the civilians and then to have the big thug countries move in for the kill under the guise of UN, US, NATO faux-humanitarianism is disgusting.
Here is a quote from Finian Cunningham:
http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article33228.htm
"Previously, the US and other Western governments had declined to commit military forces to Syria, as they had done in Libya last year, preferring the covert option of proxy forces, including Persian Gulf Arab weapon suppliers and mercenary fighters. That calculus seems to be now changing.
"The first point to note from above is that the allegations of Syria mobilizing chemical weapons are stemming from unnamed and unverifiable American military intelligence sources, who have been busily briefing, anonymously, the major news media organizations, including CNN and the New York Times. These “reports” are then amplified by other Western media outlets, such as the Washington Post, BBC, Financial Times and Britain’s Guardian newspaper.
"This is the same process of disinformation that set Iraq up for an illegal nine-year war of aggression, beginning in 2003 - with over one million people killed - over that country’s non-existent weapons of mass destruction.
"It is the same scurrilous, criminal process that has set up Iran up for crippling - and illegal - economic sanctions over unfounded allegations of nuclear weapons, which are in turn fuelling tensions towards a possible all-out war on the Islamic Republic.
"That’s why Obama and Clinton’s latest warning words to Syria are ominous. “The world is watching… for any evidence of chemical weapons.” In other words, the world is being prepared for a “shocking revelation” by American and Western spy agencies and ventriloquist media, who are about as trustworthy as a nest of scorpions and rattlesnakes.
"The second point to note is that the Syrian government has repeatedly denied possession of chemical weapons and that if it had such munitions it would not deploy them against its own citizens.
"Apart from the CIA and other anonymous secret service agents doing their best through trusty media outlets to whip up hysteria about sarin, VX, mustard gas and other horrors, the other tactic by Western forces is to portray the Damascus government as increasingly panicky and therefore sufficiently under duress that it would resort to such weapons."
